Medical Research

The Foundation seeks to stimulate innovative research on potential treatments for serious medical conditions that have been underfunded. Projects that promise development, testing, and realistic pathways to implementation of new therapies will be considered for funding. Collaborative efforts by researchers and clinicians are particularly valued.

From a public health perspective, governments, pharmacological industry and healthcare systems may allocate resources based on factors such as the disease's prevalence, impact on public health, and economic considerations. Some diseases do not receive the same priority due to the small number of patients.
According to the National Institute of Health (NIH) in the United States, there are at least 7,000 diseases that have not been addressed. Each of these diseases may have unique characteristics, genetic origins, and symptoms.
Unlike the more common conditions, some diseases often lack unified, powerful advocacy. The patient and caregiver communities for rare diseases are poorly connected and face difficulties in organizing and advocating for increased funding and research.
Mike and Sofia Segal Foundation is interested in underfunded disease medical research, and has already committed major funding to Leukimea & Lymphoma Society(LLS) and Ehlers-Danlos Society(EDS).
